New Air Conditioning Unit

New Residential Air Conditioning Units

Is it time to think about a new solution for cooling?  What are the options?  What are the questions to ask?

Firstly, efficiency is a major concern.  When considering the efficiency of a new air conditioning unit it is important to understand the rating systems.

The SEER rating or the EER rating is a measure of the efficiency of the air conditioning system.  Conventional systems are measured by the SEER rating and geothermal systems are measured by the EER rating.

  • The higher the rating, the more efficient the system
  • The more efficient the system, the less your energy costs will be
  • The less your energy costs are, the greater the long term savings will be

A second major concern is the initial cost of the installation.  What will your up-front costs be?  A conventional system is generally less costly as far as the initial installation.   A more efficient geothermal system will generally cost more to install, but will cost less over the life of the system.

One question to ask is how long you intend to own the property.  Will you be there long enough to recoup the investment?

Another consideration is resale value.  Many people now are very concerned with utility costs and ask to see copies of utility bills when making a decision on what to offer for a home.  So even if you do not intend to live there long enough for the system to pay for itself, it may make sense to install the better system depending on the type of home you have.

One other consideration is maintenance and the life of the system.  Maintenance is higher and lifetime is lower on a conventional system.  Portions of it are located outside in the elements and do not last as long.  Maintenance is quite a bit lower and lifetime is higher on a geothermal system.  The piping system is underground and lasts up to 30 years and the other equipment is indoors away from the elements.

Each of the points above is important in choosing a new air conditioning unit.  Choose the system that makes sense for you.  Please call us for additional information or with any questions.  We will be happy to help in any way we can.
